Dean Smith Retirement

It has been quite a while since October 9, 1997. I’ll never forget being told that Dean Smith was retiring and immediately telling the messenger he wasn’t funny and to quit lying about something like that. He finally convinced me that it might not be a joke, so I investigated a bit and quickly found it definitely was no joke. Surprisingly, I couldn’t fight back the tears. I felt like there had been a death in my immediate family. And then I concluded I must really be crazy to have such strong emotions over a person whom I had never met and who was still alive.

Dean Smith came to Carolina 6 months before I was born. HE was the reason I became such a fan of Carolina basketball and by association, a fan of the university itself. Words cannot express how much I respect and love that man. But after over 13 years, I thought I could finally watch his retirement press conference without crying. That turned out to be inaccurate, but as I watched, I was reminded of many of the reasons I respect Coach Smith as much as I do.

Here, if you haven’t seen it in a while, it’s definitely worth a few minutes of your time:

GO HEELS!

“Tar Heel Tip-Off” and “Basketball: Multiple Offenses and Defenses”

All four annual editions of “Tar Heel Tip-Off” (2007-2008, 2008-2009, 2009-2010, 2010-2011) should arrive any day now providing the snow doesn’t prevent the UPS and USPS drivers from making the trek up my drive.  I’m looking forward to diving right in as soon as the packages are plunked down on my front porch.

Little did I know that I’ve been reading and admiring the work of the THTO author, Adrian Atkinson, for many years now — except that I knew him by another name and as a very intelligent Inside Carolina message board poster.  (Yes, such a creature does exist!)

Also included in one of my orders is Dean Smith’s “Basketball: Multiple Offenses and Defenses” — one of best X’s and O’s basketball books out there and written by one of the most brilliant basketball minds of my lifetime. It should be a real treat!

A look at UNC’s first possession against UVA (via The Mikan Drill)

Good breakdown!

A look at UNC's first possession against UVA There was a nice mixture of good defensive rotation on UNC's initial pick and roll by UVA yet solid offensive execution by UNC on the second option. This is a good example of a team not panicking after their first option fails and continuing with their game plan and executing the second option. Good rotation on pick and roll The play opens with a pick and roll between Larry Drew and John Henson. The play looks to be designed for Henson to roll to … Read More
